High Tg PCBs

High Tg PCBs are high-temperature-resistant circuit boards with an increased glass transition temperature (Tg). While standard FR-4 PCBs have a Tg of about 130°C, High-Tg materials offer values of 170°C to 180°C or higher. This increased temperature resistance makes them ideal for applications with high thermal stress, high-current applications, and demanding industrial electronics.

Advantages of High Tg PCBs

High Tg PCBs stand out with their excellent thermal stability and are specifically designed for demanding applications. With glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 170°C to 180°C, they offer increased temperature resistance, making them ideal for high-performance environments. Their low thermal expansion (CTE) minimizes warping and reduces thermal stress. They also have high reliability, even at extreme temperatures and mechanical stress. Thanks to their improved moisture resistance, they are optimally suited for harsh environments. Moreover, they are ideal for multilayer designs, ensuring stable performance even with high layer counts.

Types of High Tg PCB Materials

Depending on the application, different High Tg materials are available:

  • FR-4 High Tg (170-180°C) is a universally applicable solution for high-temperature applications.
  • Polyimide High Tg (up to 250°C) is perfect for extreme environments like aerospace.
  • Isola High Tg Laminates are designed for high-speed and high-frequency applications.
  • Rogers High Tg Laminates offer excellent properties for high-frequency and microwave applications.

Typical Areas of Application

Thanks to their high heat resistance, High Tg PCBs are ideal for various demanding industries. In the automotive and electromobility sector, they are used for control units, high-current circuits, and battery management systems (BMS). Power electronics and industry benefit from their resilience in high-temperature environments and power modules. In aerospace, they are used for their robustness in extreme conditions. Telecommunications and networking applications, especially in the area of 5G and high-speed data transmission, also rely on high Tg PCBs. Moreover, they are used for high-power LEDs as they ensure optimized heat dissipation.
